Sunflower Sunbird Flower Seeds

Sunbird Sunflower Seed

This sunflower is the classic garden favourite with the large, yellow flowered face that follows the sun and produces large grey striped seeds.

It grows to 2-3.2m, and the height can be maximised with a liquid fertiliser, worm juice, or compost tea every few weeks.  This annual grows one large flower head above an unbranched stem.

This variety has many uses including:

  • Bird and poultry food - chickens can eat the seeds and leaves
  • Delicious, nutty edible seeds - raw or lightly roasted
  • Cooking oil if grown in large quantities
  • Attracts bees and beneficial insects
  • A living trellis for vines and small climbing plants
  • Multiple rows create a windbreak
  • Great plant for kids to grow!

Companion Planting Information:

Sunflowers grown near corn, cucumbers, and tomatoes can help to improve their growth.

Due to the diverse pollinating and beneficial insects they attract, they are a fabulous integrated pest management plant to reduce populations of sap sucking insects such as thrip and aphids on veggies and other garden plants.

When planted nearby, Sunflowers are reported to have a detrimental effect on the growth of bush beans, climbing beans, and potatoes.

How to Grow:

Select a partial or full sun site.  Sow in Spring or Summer as they like a warm soil to germinate in, that is moist and well drained.

Sow seeds 30cm apart to a 1cm depth.  They reach their maturity in 80-100 days.

Seed Harvesting:

The seeds will be ready to harvest about a month after the flower appears.  Bag the head to save the seed if the birds are not sharing nicely!  Harvest the seeds when the plant starts to die off.

Seed Specification:

  • Heirloom and Open-pollinated
  • Non GMO
  • Not chemically treated
  • Scientific Name - Halianthus annuus
  • Seed packet - contains 30 seeds

What is a Heirloom Seed?

The definition of an heirloom seed is a seed that has been grown and passed down over many generations. Since agriculture began, people have been choosing the qualities they like in a plant and saved those seeds to grow year after year. This plant selection can only be done with open-pollinated seeds.

What is an Open-Pollinated Seed?

Open pollination means the flowers are fertilised by bees, moths, bats, birds and even the wind or rain. The seed that forms produces the same plant next year.
