The Urban Revolution Team

Our team are a casual staff workforce with a wonderful mix of diverse interests and passions. We have worked with inspirational uni students who eventually move on to careers focused on a sustainable planet.

In our team today, Jo, Bec, Matt and Alice live within walking distance of our Vic Park store, Kate and Pearl are in the Perth Hills and Niko from the Northern suburbs. We all grow food, compost, and are continually learning how to transform everyday living into acts of Earth regeneration!

Between us we hold Permaculture Design Certificates, and an Advanced Permaculture Design Certificate in Permaculture. We are members of our local Community Gardens, shop locally, and support independent local businesses.

Jo Bussell Founder of Urban Revolution

Jo founded Urban Revolution in 2013, a purpose-driven business focused on urban food systems and sustainable living. She began her career working on industrial control systems in oil & gas and mining. With nutrient-dense food growing goals for her young family, learning about Permaculture and living soil was life changing. The retail store opened in 2017, to share practical, Earth-friendly living skills and products, through workshops and everyday conversations in-store. Jo is passionate about sharing her experience in composting household organic waste, reducing plastic waste, microbial life in living soil, growing food, chooks, and whole food cooking.

Bec Urban Revolution Family

Bec is the smiling face of our Perth Eco and Garden Store. With a strong background in retail, catering and hospitality, she regularly spoils us with an array of home baked goods for in store events.  She managed the design and build of her permaculture property in nearby Kensington, where she enjoys growing veggies and keeping chooks. She also engages with her local community by running community composting on her front verge. Bec holds a Permaculture Design Certificate and enjoys learning new things from the customers everyday as much as she loves helping them.

Kate Urban Revolution Family

Kate moved to the Perth Hills from the UK in 2018 and enjoys learning about backyard biodiversity and how to grow a successful edible garden in Perth’s wonderfully warm climate. She is committed to low tox living, working hard to minimise the use of chemicals at home and in family life. With a strong background in marketing, she has most recently worked on a self employed basis for small businesses, while raising her young family. Kate has a specific responsibility for marketing as part of the Urban Revolution team, and can also be found in-store regularly on Sunday and Monday.

Alice Urban Revolution Family

Alice is one of our treasured support crew. Whilst you might not see her in store, you're sure to have seen her work - from managing our socials, shops displays, workshops, promotions and more. Alice's experience in small business, marketing and her love for environment make her a much valued team member, and great fit to help bring Urban Revolution out into the open, for all to enjoy.

Pearl Urban Revolution Family

Pearl gardens and breathes in the Perth Hills, with a pet bird, a close sister and many trees. Over the last few years, her interest in permaculture has taken her to the eastern states and even Geoff Lawton’s Greening the Desert Project in the Middle East. Pearl enjoys being part of the eco community across Australia, including Activate tree planting festivals and farmer’s markets. When not behind the till, you can find Pearl caretaking the flora at Pachamama daycare in Lesmurdie, travelling or playing live music shows.

Niko Urban Revolution Family

Niko was born and raised in Perth, with her French and Greek heritage laying a foundational passion for good food and family. Her background in Nutrition Science & Dietetics, and a love for travel, has led to her unique experiences on Permaculture farms in Italy and Thailand. Now dedicated to a life of permaculture and sustainability, she attained her Permaculture Design Certificate in 2024, and aspires to help make sustainable gardening and healthy eating common practice in Perth.

Matt Urban Revolution Family

Matt brings a wealth of experience in customer service and e-commerce to the Urban Revolution team, where he has specific responsibility for online marketing and search engine optimisation. He has a keen interest in sustainability and gardening which stems from childhood days spent on his grandparents rose farm in the Perth Hills. Matt is currently establishing a veggie garden by repurposing IBCs, and recently completed the renovation of his front yard which included the restoration of jarrah fencing and planting a waterwise native verge garden.

We love to share know-how on subjects including; composting, soil creation, growing food, integrated pest management, permaculture, earth-friendly household products, reducing waste, recycling, veggie growing bed positioning, plant-out advise and design. These services are in-store based with no customer cost.
