The Best Way To Grow Mushrooms At Home

Growing mushrooms is a whole different ball game to growing fruits and veggies. It may seem a little daunting at first but growing your own mushrooms is so easy and satisfying!

The Easiest Way To Grow Mushrooms At Home

We love that these Mushroom Grow Kits are so easy to use (you can grow mushrooms right on your kitchen bench!) and that they recycle waste coffee grounds collected from Australian cafes.

With a little added moisture, the coffee grounds inside the box create the perfect environment for growing gourmet oyster mushrooms. The kit comes ready with the mushroom spores dispersed through the sealed box of coffee grounds so they are ready to grow as soon as you open the box and mist with water.

These oyster mushrooms contain protein, iron, calcium, magnesium, selenium, vitamins B1, B2, B5, B6 and B7, and are a highly prized meat substitute. The growing process is so easy - you don't need any prior experience and if leave it unattended for days or weeks, just resume the home growing when you return and your mushrooms will be fine!

Sally from our Urban Revolution team recently tested out a Mushroom Grow Kit for herself and was thrilled by the result. See the photos below from Day 7, Day 8, and Day 9.

One Mushroom Grow Kit can give multiple harvests (up to three harvests) over 10-16 weeks and we love using our little Mushroom Knife to pick mushrooms from the box to use straight away in the kitchen.

It is important to note that the mushroom grow boxes have a 6 month shelf life and you should never continue growing if you notice green mould among your mushrooms - this is toxic and the batch should be discarded straight away.

How to Clean and Store Any Mushrooms

For any mushrooms, whether they're home-grown, foraged or store bought, it's important to clean them without damaging them and to store them correctly to get the most flavour, nutrition and life out of them!

Use a mushroom knife with a brush or a purpose-built mushroom brush to help clean the dirt from mushrooms without damaging their skins.

Mushrooms can be stored in the fridge for a couple of days in a regular container but you can significantly prolong their fridge storage life by storing them in a vegetable storage pouch from The Swag. These awesome food storage solutions naturally prolong the life of almost any fruit or vegetable stored inside them and are one of our highly recommended products for reducing food waste.

These kits are brill! I’ve just grown one too and was so shocked at how easy it was. Definitely recommend them for ease of use! I was amazed how quickly the mushrooms grew once they started to appear.
