We are very excited to welcome Galloway Springs Seeds to our already large collection of West Australian heirloom and open-pollinated seed range. Galloway Springs Farm is located near Bridgetown, Western Australia, and practises Regenerative Agriculture to grow beautiful and nutritious food.
Currently we are stocking their Glass Gem Corn and Heritage Mini Red Corn varieties of popping corn and we are looking forward to increasing their range of seeds in our store as they become available.
Glass Gem is an heirloom, open-pollinated variety of popping or flint corn that produces cops in variety of colours from white, yellow, black, blue, purple and red that look like beautiful glass beads. It is easy to grow and nutritious to eat. Aside from used as a popping corn, it can also be picked young and used in a stir fry or dried and ground for corn meal.
Mini Red corn is also an heirloom, open-pollinated variety of popping corn that produces cobs about a 1/3 of of the size of a regular corn cob with tiny red seeds that is best used for pop corn but can also be eaten as baby corn.
The definition of an heirloom seed is a seed that has been grown and passed down over many generations. Since agriculture began, people have been choosing the qualities they like in a plant and saved those seeds to grow year after year. This plant selection can only be done with open-pollinated seeds. Open pollination means the flowers are fertilised by bees, moths, bats, birds and even the wind or rain. The seed that forms produces the same plant next year.
