Make Your Own All-Purpose Surface Spray—Two Ways!

  • 3 min read

99% of your everyday cleaning tasks can be done with simple and safe ingredients. No need for complicated concoctions and toxic chemicals. Try making your own cleaning products at home for a safer clean.

These simple all-purpose spray recipes have been put together by Bec Gardiner from Urban Revolution. They're healthier for us and our local environment, avoid plastic waste and can save us money too!

The first recipe uses white vinegar as the base, and the second recipe uses liquid castile soap.

Between the two recipes, you cover every common household surface:

  • Use the vinegar recipe for shine and mineral/grease cutting on hard non-porous surfaces.
  • Use the castile soap recipe as the gentle, universally safe option for anything acid-sensitive.

Please note that vinegar, while highly effective, is acidic and can damage some surfaces. Read the notes below the recipe of when to avoid, and opt for the castile soap recipe when more gentle clean is needed.

Recipe 1: Vinegar-Based All-Purpose Surface Spray

Ingredients:

  • 250ml (1 cup) White Vinegar
  • 250ml (1 cup) Distilled or Purified or Boiled and Cooled Water
  • 10-15 drops Essential Oils (or infuse the vinegar with citrus peels for 1 week and strain)

Method:

Combine ingredients in a spray bottle.

How to Use:

Shake well before each use.

Best for: kitchen counters (sealed surfaces only), glass and mirrors, tile, chrome taps, stainless steel appliances, laminate, plastic, toilet exteriors, general grease-cutting and deodorising.

Notes:

As vinegar is acidic, do NOT use this spray on:

  • Natural stone (marble, granite, limestone, travertine) — the acid etches and dulls the surface permanently
  • Waxed or oiled wood — breaks down the finish over time
  • Cast iron or unsealed metal — can promote rust
  • Egg spills — the acid actually coagulates egg protein, making it harder to clean, not easier

Recipe 2: Castile Soap-Based All-Purpose Surface Spray

Ingredients:

  • 500ml Distilled or Purified or Boiled and Cooled Water
  • 30ml (2 tbsp) Liquid Castile Soap
  • ½ tsp Glycerine (optional)
  • 10-15 drops Essential Oils

Method:

Combine in a spray bottle, swirl gently to mix (don’t shake vigorously — castile soap foams easily).

How to Use:

Shake lightly before use if it separates.

Best for: natural stone (marble, granite benchtops), wood (sealed or unsealed — safe for cutting boards, furniture), leather, most fabric-upholstered furniture (spot test first), general dusting/wiping.

This spray is a safe fallback for any surface when you’re unsure.

Notes:

  • Milder degreasing power than vinegar or washing soda — for heavy grease, wipe twice or follow with a dry cloth buff
  • Can leave a slight film on glass if not buffed dry — use vinegar-based surface spray instead for streak-free glass
  • In hard water areas, may leave faint soap-scum residue on some surfaces — wipe with a barely damp cloth after to clear it
