5 Zero-Waste Toothpaste Alternatives to Try

  • 3 min read

Brushing our teeth and protecting our oral health is hugely important. Sadly, traditional toothpastes end up producing a whole lot of unnecessary waste. We all brush our teeth daily, so the packaging waste adds up quickly.

If you’re looking to cut down on your waste or embrace more natural ways of brushing your teeth, check out these zero-waste toothpaste alternatives.

1.Peppermint Tooth Soap

Tooth soap is an all-natural soap made specifically for cleaning teeth. Some people, like Urban Revolution founder Jo, swear by tooth soap and use nothing else. For others, it takes some getting used to. We recommend giving it a go and seeing if it agrees with you.

We stockPeppermint Tooth Soap handcrafted in Australia by Urthly Organics. Made only from saponified coconut, olive and hempseed oils, cocoa butter, salt, charcoal and peppermint essential oil.

Simply wet your tooth brush, rub it on the soap and brush your teeth as normal. The soap block lasts a long time–– up to 6 months with typical use.Plastic-free refills are available when you run out.

2. Activated Charcoal Tooth Powder

Activated charcoal is a popular ingredient in natural cosmetics and dental products. It’s made from wood and coconut shells that are oxidised under high heat. Its high absorption properties make it good at drawing out plaque and other compounds that stain teeth. Many people report whiter teeth after using activated charcoal.

Bring your own container to our store and fill up onActivated Charcoal Tooth Powder made locally by The Family Hub. Not able to get in store? We also stockActivated Charcoal Tooth Power from Brush It On which comes in a metal tin.

3.Pearl Tooth Powder

Another all-natural tooth powder that removes stains. Pearl tooth powder is a good alternative for anyone who isn’t a fan of activated charcoal (some people find activated charcoal to be too abrasive for their teeth and gums).

Use as is by dipping your toothbrush bristles into the powder. Or mix with coconut oil to form a paste that helps neutralise odours and freshen up your mouth.

ThePearl Tooth Powder from Brush It On is made from peppermint oil, pearl powder, poria cocos powder, Lonicera japonica extract and Galla Rhois extract. Free from SLS, palm oil and parabens.
