How to Use a Neti Pot:
For centuries, people have relied on the Ayurvedic practice of using a neti pot to cleanse their nasal passages. Resembling a small teapot, the neti pot helps flush mucus from the nose.
Using a saline solution rather than plain water reduces irritation during the process. To use, gently pour the saline solution into one nostril, allowing it to flow through the nasal cavity and exit through the other nostril, promoting clearer breathing and sinus comfort.
Step 1:
Fill a clean, dry neti pot with saline solution. If preparing your own, use cool boiled or distilled water—avoid tap water. Lean over the sink, looking straight down into the basin. Tilt your head at a 45-degree angle and gently insert the neti pot’s spout into the upper nostril, ensuring a secure seal without touching the septum. This technique helps ensure a comfortable and effective nasal rinse.
Step 2:
While breathing through your mouth, tilt the neti pot to allow the saline solution to enter your upper nostril. Maintain the tilt as the solution flows through your nasal passage and exits the other nostril. The liquid will drain from the nostril nearest to the sink basin.
Step 3:
Keep pouring the saline solution into your nostril until the neti pot is completely empty. After finishing, gently remove the neti pot and lift your head. Breathe through both nostrils to help clear your nasal passages. Use a tissue to gently wipe away any remaining saline and mucus that may drip from your nose.
Step 4:
Repeat the same process to let the saline solution pass through your other nostril.
