Ashwood Hori Hori Soil Knife

The Hori Hori soil knife (also known as a Japanese soil knife) is a multi-functional hand tool with a unique blend of digging and cutting features that is a must-have for every gardener.

Origins of Hori Hori Soil Knife

The Hori Hori knife originated in Japan in 1876, when the Meiji government officially banned the manufacturing of katanas, so swordsmiths switched to making Hori Hori knives to make a living. The high quality of their work in making swords was welcomed by gardeners and farmers and the Hori Hori knife was born.

In the beginning, the Hori-Hori knife was called the Sansai knife, as it was used to excavate Sansai and harvest vegetables from the mountains.

The Hori Hori knife is popular among permaculture gardeners and is likened to a chef's knife - buy a good one and it will last a lifetime and become an essential tool in your gardening kit.
